An Interactive Session Between The AiRS and The Association of Private School Owners in the State.

The Management of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service AiRS on Wednesday July 10,2024 had an interactive session with the various associations of Private School Owners in Anambra State. The meeting was held at the Board Room, Revenue House, Awka.

The meeting was convened by the Senior Special Assistant to Gov Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR on (IGR Technical), Mrs. Oyeka Amara Kate FCA FCTI was chaired by the Executive Director, Direct Assessment, AiRS, Mr Ben Anierobi Okafor.. According to Mrs Oyeka, the purpose was to have a close interaction with the association with a view to explain and fine tune the possible revenue due for them in line with the vision and mission of increasing the State Internally generated revenue. She extensively explained taxation as a function of income and cannot be paid uniformly, even as she lectured them with her knowledge on some of the taxes and levies expected of them to oblige; PAYE, Business Premises, ASWAMA, Fire Service, Withholding Tax, Personal Income Tax, etc.

In their response, some of the members of the association expressed their worries/concern on the issue of payment of business premises citing that the private school owners should be exempted as they are rendering help to the government in the areas of education and should not be seen a business venture. The SSA responded to their concern and made it clear to them that they are into private businesses and as such should be subjected in all ramifications to pay their taxes and Levies due from them.

On the other hand, the Executive Director Direct Assessment AiRS, Mr Okafor admonished the representative from the Ministry of Education to include the demand for payment of Personal Income Tax in their checklist as one of the prerequisites for licence renewal.

Towards the end of the meeting, Mrs Oyeka hinted to them about the upcoming planned AiRS School Tax Competition 1.0 and the modules of participation strictly for private schools across the three geo-political zones in Anambra State. The AiRS in-house You-Tube program Tax Insight Monday which is geared towards empowering Anambra tax evolution was also part of the hint. She urged them to avail themselves of the opportunity to sell their products across AiRS social media platforms, adding that the program is being anchored here at the Revenue House.
