NFIU: Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit visits AIRS, Organizes Strategic Training Session on Tax Evasion and Money Laundry.

Update From The Revenue House:….

Earlier today August 24,2023, the delegation from the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) had a strategic training session with the Heads of Department of the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue Service AiRS at the Board Room, Revenue House Awka.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) is the central national agency responsible for the receipt of disclosures from reporting organisations, the analysis of these disclosures and the production of intelligence for dissemination to competent authorities. The NFIU is an autonomous unit, domiciled within the Central Bank of Nigeria and the central coordinating body for the country’s Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorist Financing and Counter-Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/CPF) framework.

This particular training with the AiRS management was hinged on how to proactively dictate taxpayers who evade tax and tax related money laundering. This is in line with the fact that one of the biggest challenges facing the country today is due to tax evasion that affects the government revenue. Tax evasion has become a global concern reducing the ability of government to raise revenue required to fill their reserve. Tax related money laundering is the process through which proceeds of tax crimes are hidden.

The Head of the NFIU delegation and the facilitator of the training, *Mr Lamanti Labotatic* (Deputy Head, Tax Related Money Laundry) TRML in his analysis enumerated some of the indicators to tax evasion as follows; manipulation of accounts records including understatement of turnover and overstatement of records, transfer of assets overseas, non payment of CGT on assets disposal, use of of-shote companies in tax Haven, registration of assets in nominee names in order to evaluate taxes in the country amongst others. Participants were trained on a particular software used in sending reports for onward analysis.

In his remark at the end of the training, the Chairman/Chief Executive Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue Service AiRS,*Dr Greg Ezeilo FCA* thanked the delegation for finding the AiRS worthy of the visit and the training assistant. According to him, the purpose of the engagement is capable of multiplying our internally generated revenue IGR. Highpoint of the visit were the presentation of Laptops to the AiRS Chairman, Dr Ezeilo by the Head of NFIU delegation, *Mr Lamanti Labotatic*.
