In a bid to reposition the process of revenue collection and administration and in turn increase the State Internally Generated Revenue for the State, The Management of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service AiRS on Friday 14 June, 2024 had another crucial meeting/training with all the Zonal Tax Heads, Station Managers across the three geo-political zone in Anambra State.
The meeting was ably conveyed by the Senior Special Assistant to Gov Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR on IGR Technical, Mrs. Oyeka Amara Kate FCA FCTI. Various issues bordered around PAYE Matters, Processes and Procedures, PAYE Template and Enumeration Sheet, Community Heads Functionalities, Condition of Work and Work Tools amongst other issues of concern were discussed at the meeting.
I’mAddressing the participants, Mrs Oyeka stated the essence of the meeting was to refresh the staff memories on everything that concerns PAYE payment and processes with a thorough demonstration of step by step documentation of PAYE activities. She equally used the opportunity to educate the participants on the new PAYE enumeration sheet that has a red caveat underneath with a strong indication of the legal implications of non-compliance. This was strategically done in order to equip the tax officers with requisite knowledge and guidelines for non compliance of PAYE payments. According to her, “the first step to every PAYE activities is enumeration. Every Tax Station Manager should ensure that the companies/organisation under their jurisdiction pays their PAYE monthly and not in bulk, as the name implies ‘Pay as You Earn’ in order to avoid unnecessary miscalculation in the PAYE computation.”
In the same vein, the Head,, Direct Assessment Dept AiRS, Mr Herbert Ofomata in his remark stated categorically that every Station Manager must endeavor to create the files of every PAYE organizations under their jurisdiction with a view to creating a healthy relationship with them and by so doing monitor their payment processes in order to ascertain whether or not they paid with the right assessment.
Similarly, the Head, PAYE Dept, AiRS,Mrs. Chika Obiano enjoined the tax officers to make sure they conduct thorough research before visiting any organization. She further disclosed that every staff should have a PAYE database created by the management. .By this directive, staff under the Station Managers are expected to forward their returns every Friday. According to her, this will be used for further appraisal of staff performance going forward and ensure accountability, adding that it is no longer business as usual. She further stressed the need for tax officers to brace up and equip themselves with basic digital skills as the world is now a global village.
Highpoints of the meeting was the presentation of various work tools as promised by the management through their SSA to Gov Soludo on IGR, Mrs Oyeka during the last meeting. Items like Laptops, Printers and Stationeries were presented to all the Zonal Tax Stations across the three geo-political zone of the State to ensure effectiveness in their job output. Similarly, a pair of Laptop were also presented to the Head of PAYE Dept, Mrs Chika Obiano as part of motivation to boost PAYE revenue generation going forward, bearing in mind that to whom much is given, much is also expected.
